Fascination with history

A life-size scene of a slave auction where a family is being torn apart is lit by red light, showing a stark contradiction from the peaceful cabin to the tragic auction block."It's disturbing," said Sharon Rapacz of Springfield on her first visit. "But I think it's realistic."Further scenes and original, rare artifacts throughout the museum show the several aspects of Lincoln's life. One life-sized scene shows pistol-wielding assassin John Wilkes Booth creeping into the theater box where Lincoln and his wife are cuddling. In another, a faux-television production studio shows news coverage of the 1860 event as if it were happening in a modern-day TV studio. It's anchored by "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert.A fast startMuseum officials estimate 1.4 million people have entered the museum since President Bush attended its opening in April 2005.Now, for Lincoln's 200th birthday next year, the museum is developing mobile displays that can travel to museums across the country.

Diabetes 'next step' study open

Diabetes patients who are having trouble controlling their disease are being invited to take the "next step" in treatment through a new study at St. Louis University.

The Diabetes Next Step research will test the effectiveness of adding bedtime insulin therapy to the patients' current treatment regimen. It will compare two different types of insulin when added to the oral drugs and exenatide that Type 2 diabetes patients are already taking.

"The potential benefits to the patients are threefold," said Dr. Griffing, a professor of general internal medicine at the school.

"First, there is a potential for improved blood sugar control. Second, patients will receive close medical monitoring by research-trained staff. Third, patients will receive research study drugs at no cost along with supplies, testing and medical care."

The study is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 75 who is taking metformin and exenatide.

Leaks fixed, flows begin

We've invested a lot of money in improving the leak performance of the network, and elite performance of the network is equal to Australia's best," Mr Anstis said.

"We've asked the community to do a lot of work and hopefully we can demonstrate we've done a lot of work also, and make the system as efficient as we can."

Mr Anstis said maintenance of Ballarat's water system was "a program of continual improvement."

Darfur peace talks in Libya produce only an emboldened Khartoum

As recently as November 9, 2007, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon noted yet again that Khartoum has failed to accept the proposed civilian police and security personnel---more than three months after Resolution 1769, and a year after discussions of such a force were begun in Addis Ababa.

China is again supporting Khartoum without qualification despite other forms of obstructionism by the regime, including the refusal to grant land necessary for housing UNAMID forces; denying landing rights for critically important heavy transport aircraft; denying adequate port access; refusing to guarantee unrestricted flights; and refusing to guarantee reporting independence for monitors and other personnel. These forms of obstructionism are detailed in a recent Amnesty International report (see below), as well as by a number of UN officials.
