Potholes sink road budgets
"They spring up where they spring up. It's kind of like a teenager with acne." So said Kirk Weston, director of the St. Clair County Road Commission, about the predictability of potholes. The randomness already has started, with several area roads bearing the cratered scars of winter. .

So, for your entertainment (and mine), let's make up some New Year's resolutions for the stars. "I'm going to try really, really, really, really hard to be genuinely happy for Ashlee. Even though she thinks she's better than I am, and she's way cuter than me now. And she's probably making more money than me, and Papa Joe likes her better." --Jessica Simpson "I will continue to take over my sister's identity." --Ashlee Simpson "I promise to buy those days of the week underwear y'all and wear them every single day. Pinky swear." --Britney "We're going to adopt at least gazillion more babies this year." --Brangelina "I won't have sex for a whole year... take two." --Paris "We are going to try to be much less creepy." --TomKat "I will not steal illegally obtain any small children this year." --Madonna "Annoying Meredith Grey no more.

Andrew Walter made a lot of mistakes, many of them understandable, in his first NFL start Sunday, but his biggest error came after the game, when he defended Randy Moss' weak afternoon. "I think Jerry Rice dropped a couple of balls,'' he said. "We can't get on a guy for that. He's going to make more plays than not.'' Where do we start? First, dropped passes weren't the problem. Moss halfway gave up on one ball, and didn't fight a defensive back on two more. He sauntered to the huddle several times, with all the enthusiasm of a shift worker punching a clock. He did drop a pass once, when he had to wait for a late throw from Walter and, as a result, absorbed a big hit from Browns free safety Brian Russell. It would be terribly unfair to blame that drop entirely on Moss ...
The Caucus Men
Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and Washington. Mrs. Clinton, by contrast, has won but a single caucus: in Nevada. She also has a slight lead in New Mexico's Feb. 5 caucus, in which provisional ballots are still being counted. Blogger Kevin Drum offers some explanations for Obama's caucus advantage: Caucuses require organization and Obama was better organized. They require enthusiasm and he has more enthusiastic supporters. They require time, and his demographic has more free time. They're mostly in small states, and Obama targeted small states. They're dominated by activists, and activists tend to support Obama. To put it another way, caucuses require that a candidate's support be deep, while primaries require that it be broad.
TheStar.com | Hockey | Leafs should start chopping from the top
Ideally, the Maple Leafs would have the pick of the litter, the very best hockey minds in the world clamouring to work for them. But that's just not the way it is.Moreover, to get one of the really big names - Brian Burke, Lou Lamoriello - they'd have to wait until June or July, and this thing's going downhill faster than that. There are quality hockey people out there, available today. Even Pat Quinn, as utterly laughable as that may sound. Then again, this is an organization that brought back Punch Imlach, Carl Brewer, Mike Pelyk, Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour for second go-rounds, so it's not like the stupidity of bringing back Quinn would be out of the MLSE strike zone.So who would you get? As a new GM, or president, or coach?Click here for a closer look with Damien Cox in his blog, The Spin.
Commodities and Financials: Opposite Ends
This has led to record valuation spreads between commodities and financials... In fact, the spread in valuations is wider now than at any time in the past 55 years. In our experience, the extreme views driving this spread are a perfect example of momentum "groupthink," which rarely turns out to be correct, and we believe present us with an extraordinary value opportunity in financial stocks.
