Callison: Book fills gap for cancer patients
Louis Whitehead's goal for 2008 is to have no goal. OK, that's not totally accurate. Whitehead has many goals in his life. Primary among them is finding fulfillment in whatever he does. But in a life that was rocked by change in its third decade, Whitehead knows he won't find purpose in life by remaining static and letting it come to him. Instead, he seeks it out by frequent travel. "At this point, I don't know if there is an end in sight," Whitehead says of his personal journey of discovery. A freelance writer, photographer and Web designer who also works part time at South Dakota State University, Whitehead has recorded one life-altering event in a book, "Living Through Leukemia: A Journey to Health." That journey led him to several rounds of chemotherapy and a bone-marrow transplant that has changed his blood type and renewed his life.
Kenya Trip Expands Outlook on Africa
Cloudless blue skies, 75-degree weather with no humidity and summer breezes, and hundreds of varieties of flowering bushes and trees are the backdrop for Kenya, a nation in crisis. Kenya is a long way from the United States, far enough away to be out of sight and out of mind despite post-election violence. That is the impression one gets from the news media and its rapidly waning coverage. Nothing could be further from reality. Experience teaches. It is simple as that. When my older son, Joel, said his fiancée, Dawn Kuguru, wanted to be married in her native Kenya, it was overwhelming to me. All I could think was, "You've got to be kidding!" That was almost a year ago, and now my family and I have returned from what we consider a life-enriching experience.
Editorial - McCain, Obama bank on Wisconsin
Winning Wisconsin gives candidates the bright glow of electability. That's because the Wisconsin primary is the closest thing to a general election as the primary season can deliver. It's easier to vote in Wisconsin. We allow same-day registration at the polls, and voters don't have to declare allegiance to a specific political party. That means independent voters like me, who couldn't stomach the idea of publicly identifying ourselves as a Republican or Democrat, have as much control as the party faithful in picking party winners. In fact, the largest segment of voters in Wisconsin 40 percent are those who consider themselves politically independent, a recent statewide poll of 600 residents suggests. .
Stunning win lifts Barack Obama’s bid to become first black ...
I was dubious about Obama for along time, mainly because of his relative youth and inexperience. However, the more I read about him the more I like was he stands for, and the more I see him the more I think he could be an inspiring world leader. While I'm here, why is it that he is consistently referred to as black when he is mixed race? .
The Vicky Files: Is Emery in the doghouse?
Super Bowl Sunday is upon us, and in my opinion, the biggest story isn't the perfection of the New England Patriots. It isn't whether another Manning can win a Super Bowl. Or even if "Spygate" will hang over the whole thing. It's halftime. Ever since the "wardrobe malfunction", the NFL has chosen "safe" acts for its biggest stage. This year, it turned to "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul, who -- many, many years ago -- had a music career. Now, she wasn't the most gifted singer or dancer, nor was she the most attractive musician, but somehow, she maintained a career long enough that she got the producers of one of America's top shows to buy into her. Her behavior on that show often is cringe-worthy, but it's nothing compared to what she is up to now. You see, Ms. Abdul wants to pre-tape her routine, because, ummm, she is too nervous to perform live.
'Top Model' quitter Ebony Morgan: I was so over the whole reality ...
"I just did not want to be there anymore. I really didn't have a desire for it. At that point, I didn't really care about being America's Next Top Model," Morgan told reporters during a Thursday conference call. "I didn't really care half as much as the other girls did, so I didn't think it would be fair for me to stay there if I really didn't care for it as much... I just realized that wasn't my passion and I was so over the whole reality show thing." The 20-year-old Chicago, IL nursing student's decision to quit Top Model 9 had also apparently been on her mind for quite some time. .
UN Envoy Vists Darfur Rebel Heartland
Among those skeptical of peace talks was Elnur's elderly father. "Tell my son we are proud of him, that he must continue the fight because we are dying," Mohamed Ahmed Elnur told The Associated Press. Peace negotiations were launched by Eliasson in October, but broke off just after opening in Libya because of the absence of major rebel chiefs. Abdulwahid Elnur, who lives in exile in Paris, is the founder of the Sudan Liberation Army. He yields little military power, but enjoys widespread following among his tribe, the Fur, which is Darfur's largest and gave the region its name. .
