Dade schools eye advertising revenue
At the urging of the School Board, Superintendent Rudy Crew and his staff are exploring the possibility of allowing advertising in schools as a possible stream of revenue for the cash-strapped district. While ads abound in other South Florida school districts, the move by the Miami-Dade School Board is nonetheless controversial. Critics say children are already inundated with advertising, and that a captive audience of students shouldn't be bombarded with the wiles of Madison Avenue. ''The perception is that advertising in schools is a free source of money,'' said Robert Weissman, managing director of Commercial Alert, a Washington-based consumer group. ``That isn't true. There are huge costs involuntarily being taken out on the kids.'' Advocates say allowing advertising encourages partnerships between local businesses and schools.
Jeff Thelen's Blog
After hearing the exchange, the group behind us (all adults) actually made several comments about the movie during the movie. (I found them all pretty funny) But the gentleman in front of me didn't say another word. So, here's my question to you. Is it rude to talk and laugh and make comments at a theater, before the film begins during the trailers? Or is it rude to ask someone to hush up in a theater before the movie begins? I know some people really like the previews, so may be we were out of line. On the other hand, I sort of felt like he jumped the gun telling us to be quiet before the movie ever began. I'm sort of lost here, does anyone know proper theater etiquette? J Respond to Jeff's blog here: UPDATE ON 1/30/08Hi everybody and thanks for all the responses! There are so many I can't answer them all, except the ones that need to be directly addressed.
