9 p.m.: Chief: Fire at trailer park ‘suspicious’

Whitehead said firefighters had the blaze under control shortly before 2:15 p.m. Frankton and Chesterfield-Union Township firefighters assisted at the scene. No firefighters were injured battling the fire.

The home was fully engulfed with flames when firefighters arrived, Whitehead said. He said he suspected an accelerant was used to get the fire going.

"More or less gasoline," Whitehead said.

He said it's the third such suspicious blaze at the trailer park since this summer. In all the cases, he said, the utilities had been turned off to the homes and they were uninhabited. Investigators don't yet know how those blazes were set.

Whitehead couldn't immediately provide the dates of the previous fires.

Whitney Faircloth, who lives at a neighboring trailer, believes one of the previous fires was caused by workers tearing down an adjacent trailer.

Rialto perchlorate case parties agree to delay

A messy battle over efforts to clean up Rialto's drinking water continued Tuesday as suspected polluters and government agencies agreed to push past a court-imposed deadline.

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge was scheduled to hear arguments Tuesday regarding whether state cleanup hearings held by the State Water Resources Control Board can go forward.

But state officials working for the Riverside-based Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board and three suspected polluters wanted 60 more days to continue negotiating a settlement to the contamination dispute instead of going through hearings before the state board.

"The parties want some additional time to continue the talks," said Kurt Berchtold, assistant executive officer of the regional board.

In case those two-month-old talks unravel, the parties are also trying to agree on a schedule to resolve the court dispute over whether the state hearings can even take place.

Satirical Newscast, Kosher Style

Over footage of burning buildings, Israel Defense Forces troops and the Israeli prime minister, the straight-faced anchorman intones: “Great news out of Israel: Ehud Olmert has announced that the second Lebanon war was a success…. Another of Olmert's notable successes is his attempt to comb over his bald spot." Yes, it's a satirical newscast, but not “The Daily Show"; nor is it “Weekend Update" from “Saturday Night Live." On “The Mendy Report," news is delivered by a long-bearded Hasid wearing a velvet yarmulke at a rakish tilt.

Mendy Pellin, a 25-year-old Lubavitch comedian and ordained rabbi, launched his online newscast and Web channel, ChabadTube.com, in November 2006. Since then, he's built an international audience. Segments posted by fans on blogs and on video sites like YouTube and Google have drawn more than 500,000 views.

Men grow beards for Ohio contest honoring president

Ray Blinn, 60, is growing his very first beard for the contest.

"Too bad they don't have the scruffy, mountain-man category, because that's probably going to be what I look like," Blinn said.

There will not only be a prize for the best resemblance to Hayes, but also others in categories including longest, neatest and most unusual beards.
